Bella Thorne describes years of sexual, physical abuse in Instagram post

In an Instagram post on Sunday, actress Bella Thorne recounted years of sexual and physical abuse she endured until the age of 14.

Hours before the Golden Globes, which was shrouded in conversations about sexual assault and harassment in Hollywood, Thorne posted a photo of herself in a black fur coat and pink hat. In the caption, the 20-year-old described years of traumatic abuse that started as far back in childhood as she could remember.

“I was sexually abused and physically growing up from the day I can remember till [sic] I was 14..” Thorne wrote.

She said the abuse only stopped when she finally able to literally close the door to her unnamed abuser.

“When I finally had the courage to lock my door at night and sit by it,” Thorne wrote. “All damn night. Waiting for someone to take advantage of my life again. Over and over I waited for it to stop and finally it did. But some of us aren’t as lucky to get out alive.”

She asked her followers to “stand up” for people who have experienced abuse and included the Time’s Up hashtag, referring to an initiative by women in Hollywood to provide legal resources for survivors and address the problem of abuse within the industry.

“Please today stand up for every soul Mistreated. #timesup,” Thorne wrote.

She posted the same photo to Twitter, expressing that she didn’t know “what was right or wrong growing up.”

“I didn’t know the person sneaking into my bedroom at night was a bad person,” she added.

In December, Thorne implied in a tweet that she had been molested. One user wrote in response to a photo of Thorne in a purple suit, “What did Disney do to this girl?! I think she was molested.”

“Yeah I was. So it wasn’t Disney,” Thorne replied. In another tweet, she continued: “The world can be a sick place sometimes.”
