Carrie Underwood sent a letter to members of her fan club on New Year’s Day in which she revealed she suffered a “gruesome” face injury that required more than “40-50 stitches.”
The announcement comes after the news that Underwood fell on the steps outside her home in November, incurring “non life-threatening injuries including a broken wrist and cuts and abrasions,” according to her publicist. The fall caused Underwood to pull out of the Country Rising concert in Nashville, which benefitted victims of hurricanes and the Route 91 Harvest music festival shooting in Las Vegas. But it’s clear the extent of her injuries were more serious than initially reported.
omg is she okay? im actually worried now. i mean a broken wrist hurts but her face? i would hate to feel less confident over a fall that disfigured my face. poor Carrie.

“It’s crazy how a random freak accident can change your life,” Underwood wrote to her fans. “In addition to breaking my wrist, I somehow managed to injure my face as well. I’ll spare you the gruesome details, but when I came out of surgery the night of my fall, the doctor told [Underwood’s husband] Mike that he had put between 40-50 stitches in. Now, here we are 7 weeks later and, even though I’ve had the best people helping me, I’m still healing and not quite looking the same.”
The country star added that she chose to share more details of the incident now because she plans to enter the studio next week and is determined to share things with her fans throughout the process. “When I am ready to get in front of a camera, I want you to all understand why I might look a bit different,” she wrote.
Despite the significant injuries, Underwood remained optimistic for the new year and expressed gratitude for everybody who’s helped her in recovery. “I am grateful for the people in my life that have been there every step of the way,” she wrote. “I’ve still got a long ways to go in the recovery process, but it’s encouraging to see every day be a little better than the last.”
