Both her parents died when she was just a few months old.

As people grow old, roles in the family tend to switch. When parents and grandparents are already gray and old, children and grandchildren should be the ones watching over, protecting, and supporting them. Sadly, there are people who are unable to do so, given their health and financial status.

This 17-year-old girl has been suffering from a debilitating disease since she was a baby, and her father is left with no choice but to take care of her.

Apparently, Syifa is suffering from “Malabsorption Syndrome”, Malabsorption which refers to a number of disorders in which the small intestine can’t absorb enough of certain nutrients and fluids.

These nutrients can be macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats), micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), or both. Because of this Syifa is literally skin and bones, and couldn’t do anything on her own.

But thanks to her 88-year-old grandfather, Toton, she has survived for more than 17 years through his care. Both of them live in their home in Pangandaran, West Java, where Toton dedicates his entire life to taking care of his granddaughter.

Apparently, Syifa’s parents passed away when she was just a few months old. Her father was involved in an accident when she was only 5 months and her mother followed suit 3 months later, leaving Syifa with her elderly grandfather.

Toton, who worked in the army before retiring, does not receive any pension or financial aid from the government.

The only way for him to make a living is to plant vegetables and sell them. Despite his old age, Toton does everything for his granddaughter, even if it means he has to sacrifice a lot.
