Emergency services search for boy ‘caught in rip’ at Port Macquarie

Emergency services are trying to find an 11-year-old boy missing in the surf at Port Macquarie.

Four NSW Ambulance crews and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter are responding to reports of the boy’s disappearance off Lighthouse Beach.

NSW Ambulance said early reports suggest the boy is missing after being caught in a rip.

A second child has been rescued from the surf and is being treated at the scene.

Port Macquarie lifeguards closed the nearby Town Beach and Flynns Beach on Wednesday as king tides continued to surge across the Hastings coastline and river systems.

Surf Life Saving Australia says Lighthouse Beach is an attractive “but potentially hazardous [beach] owing to the frequent rips and deep trough”.

It advises swimmers to stay close inshore and to avoid the rips and currents.
