It’s safe to say that we can all agree that Gal Gadot had her breakout year in 2017. This time last year she was virtually unknown but thanks to her role in the smash hit Wonder Woman, she’s fast become one of the biggest names in Hollywood. In fact, she’s now a household name thanks to the millions of fans from all around the world that watch every move she makes. Her older fans think she’s one of the hottest actresses on the big screen while her younger ones look up to her as a role model and action star icon.
However, there are many things about Gal Gadot that her fans don’t know. After all, she guards her personal life very closely and tries to keep her private matters under the radar. But at the same time, she has managed to make a few negative headlines here and there that have threatened her perfectly crafted reputation. Of course, this is the last thing that Gal needs. She wants to become an A-list star in the entertainment industry. But her controversial social media posts and her past might not get her there. That’s why she’s trying to keep her secrets buried before her fans find out that truth about her and her rise to the top. Here are 15 things that Gal Gadot doesn’t want her fans to know about her.
15. She Was Unrecognizable Before Fame
Gal Gadot might be one of the most stunning women on the big screen right now, but she didn’t always look this perfect. As a matter of fact, Gal looks almost unrecognizable in some of her pre-fame photos. You almost have to do a double take to make sure that you are looking at her!
Now, it’s obvious that Gal was born with beautiful looks, but there’s no denying that her Hollywood makeover has sure made her one of the most beautiful women on the planet. But she didn’t always wake up looking this perfect. Before she competed in beauty competitions in Israel, Gal was just another awkward teen who struggled with less than perfect skin and makeup. But then again, who didn’t go through this stage during their own adolescence too, right?
14. She Was In The Israeli Army
What a lot of people don’t know about Gal Gadot was that she actually served in the Israeli Army and she’s proud of the time that she put in, too. There are even photos of her posing (pretty sexily, if you ask us) in her military uniform. I mean, how many Hollywood actresses do you know that have served and fought for their country? Yeah, I didn’t think so, either!
Gal has addressed her background in some interviews, although the details are not widely known. Her family life is very important to her. She once said, “I definitely have a strong sense of my Jewish and Israeli identity. I did my two-year military service; I was brought up in a very Jewish, Israeli family environment, so of course my heritage is very important to me.”
13. Wonder Woman Was Banned In Lebanon Because Of Her
Gal Gadot’s fans across the world might love her, but there was at least one country that banned Wonder Woman from hitting screens in their cinemas because of her. Before Wonder Woman hit theaters during the summer of 2016, reports indicated that the film would be banned in Lebanon. They didn’t like the fact that Gal served in the Israel Defence Force during the 2006 war, when the IDF and Hezbelloh militias in Lebanon traded missile fire for almost a month. As a result, more than 1,000 Lebanese civilians died.
If that weren’t enough, many Lebanese movie fans took to their social media accounts to call out Gal in ways that she wouldn’t want anyone to remember. They wrote, “I was trapped in a shelter with my family for 33 days when Gadot was in the IDF bombing the sh** out of us,” along with, “Banning her doesn’t begin to describe how we feel. The sounds of warplanes and falling shells on my town still follow me everywhere.”
12. A Pro-IDF Actress Playing Pro-Peace Wonder Woman?
It’s without a doubt that everyone knows Hollywood and politics shouldn’t mix, yet we see it happen all the time. Gal Gadot’s critics made it pretty clear that they didn’t like seeing a pro-IDF actress like her play an iconic pro-peace warrior princess on the big screen. Yet, that didn’t stop Gal from appearing in the movie. And she sure didn’t have any time for her haters, either. Gal said that serving in the Israeli Army was part of her civic duty and it was one she took very seriously.
She’s said, “Let me start by saying I wish no country had the need for an army. But in Israel, serving is part of being an Israeli. You’ve got to give back to the state. You give two or three years, and it’s not about you. You give your freedom away. You learn discipline and respect.”
11. She Filmed Wonder Woman Five Months Pregnant
When Gal Gadot was filming some of the re-shoots for Wonder Woman, she did her best to keep her pregnancy a secret from the cast and crew. In fact, it was hard to even tell that she was pregnant as she wasn’t showing any signs of a baby bump at all. I mean, just when you thought Gal couldn’t be any more perfect, you find out she’s also one of those pregnant women who barely look pregnant.
Of course, one of the reasons why Gal might have kept her baby bump hidden from view is because she probably didn’t want to get criticized for filming while pregnant. After all, she did quite a lot of her own stunts during the movie! And knowing just how anything can happen during a pregnancy, Gal knew she had to be careful. The last thing she wanted to deal with was comments from her critics, too.
10. Body Shamed When Wearing Wonder Woman Costume
When it comes to Hollywood critics, it seems like you just can’t make everyone happy. It seems like everyone has something to say about everything and it’s not always pretty. As a matter of fact, if you are a Hollywood actor or actress, there’s a good chance that you’ll get mocked, ridiculed and cut into pieces for your performance before anyone will have anything good to say about you.
And for Gal Gadot, she got her fair share of criticism, too. A lot of people body shamed her when she wore her Wonder Woman costume. Really, people have no reason to shame anyone about their bodies, and especially when it comes to Gal Gadot. She’s one of the very few people on this planet that can pull off a superhero costume and look the way that she does.
9. She Got Paid Less Than Henry Cavill For His Role in Superman
Here’s a fact that absolutely sucks for Gal Gadot: her on screen counterpart Henry Cavill made way more money than she did for his role in Superman. There were even some reports that indicated Gal only got a fraction of what Henry made in his paycheck. In fact, Henry supposedly made $14 million dollars for his first solo Superman movie, compared to Gal’s $300,000 paycheck. Ouch.
When one reporter asked Gal, “A lot of people batted for you, saying you needed to be paid more. What do you think?” her answer was pretty simple. She replied with, “I’m grateful and happy.” And while pay disparity has been a huge problem in Hollywood, Gal hasn’t made any additional comments about the controversy. But seeing how successful Wonder Woman was this year, there’s no doubt she’ll get some kind of pay raise for the second film.
8. She Once Said She Was Too Smart To Be An Actress
You didn’t read that wrong – Gal Gadot did once say that she thought she would be too smart to become an actress. You might call that shade, but according to Gal, she just sees it as the truth. That’s because she was more into books than into movies while she was growing up.
And while some reports say that she lost out on a James Bond role back in 2008, Gal spun the story to make her fans believe that she didn’t want it. She told W Magazine that she passed on the role because she was still in college at the time. She said, “I said, ‘I’m studying law and international relations. I’m way too serious and smart to be an actress.’” Well, we all know how that turned out.
7. She And Her Husband Are Filthy Rich
Reports indicate that Gal Gadot has a net worth of about $8 million dollars but her Hollywood movies are only a fractions of her overall income. She makes an average about $300,000 per film, which compared to industry standards, isn’t very much.
Yet, even after she was body shamed for wearing her costume, Gal also admitted that she could barely breathe in it, too. It was just THAT tight! And just to think, she was five months pregnant while she was wearing it, too. It’s her husband Yaron Versano’s net worth that has everyone talking. That’s because no one knows what the exact number is, even though he’s one of the richest men in the world. That’s because he and his brother Guy sold their Tel Aviv hotel for $26 million dollars. He also has plenty of investments that guarantee he and Gal are set for life. That of course means that Gal doesn’t have to work in Hollywood, either. She does it because she wants to.
6. She Couldn’t Breathe In Her Costume
Although she couldn’t breathe in the costume, that didn’t stop Gal from playing the role she was born to play. The costume could have been several sizes too small, but damn it, she was still determined to wear it. That’s because she loved her character. For Gal, there’s no one out there that can compare to Wonder Woman. Simply put, she’s one of a kind. Gal once said, “Wonder Woman, she’s amazing. I love everything that she represents and everything that she stands for. She’s all about love and compassion and truth and justice and equality, and she’s a whole lot of woman.”
5. She Lost Out On A Bond Girl Role
Gal Gadot became a household name thanks to her role as the iconic Wonder Woman in 2017’s smash hit of the year. But it looks like the brunette beauty tried to become famous in another iconic role a few years before she made headlines as the badass super hero of the year. Apparently, she tried out as the Bold Girl in 2008’s Quantum of Solace but sadly, lost out the role to actress Olga Kurylenko instead.
Gal has even complained that there are not enough good roles in Hollywood for women these days. In fact, she admits that it’s slim pickings for ambitious actresses who want to do more than just play the lead’s love interest. She said, “There aren’t enough good roles for strong women. I wish we had more female writers. Most of the female characters you see in films today are the ‘poor heartbroken girls.’”
4. UN Controversy
Wonder Woman was recognized by the UN for being a badass superhero and was even named as an honorary ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls. Unfortunately, not everyone agreed with this statement, though. They revoked the honor because of the criticism Wonder Woman got for her very short and very tight uniform. This didn’t sit well with Gal at all.
Gal was forced to respond to the controversy by simply stating that it wasn’t fair. She said, “There are so many horrible things that are going on in the world, and this is what you’re protesting, seriously? When people argue that Wonder Woman should ‘cover up,’ I don’t quite get it. They say, ‘If she’s smart and strong, she can’t also be sexy.’ That’s not fair. Why can’t she be all of the above?”
3. Bombed As Kendall Jenner
Gal Gadot might be Wonder Woman, but we kind of have to wonder where her comedic talent is. That’s because she pretty much bombed her recent appearance on Saturday Night Life. She played a skit in which she was supposed to mock Kendall Jenner and the Kardashian sisters, but unfortunately, her acting was more cringe-worthy than an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. And trust me, that is saying a lot right there.
Gal could have used her stint on Saturday Night Live to show off a different side of her, but unfortunately, it looks like she’s a one-trick pony when it comes to acting. Sorry, but the girl still has a long way to go in the comedy department. I mean, we’ve all seen 2016’s Keeping Up With The Joneses, right? Enough said right there.
2. Did She Just Shade Women?
Gal once said, “All my life, I’ve been working with male directors, which I’ve really enjoyed. And I’m lucky in that I’ve worked with men who have a lot of respect for women. But working with a woman is a different experience. It feels like the communication is different.”
WHOA. Given all of the headlines we’ve been hearing lately about shady directors, producers and actors in Hollywood these days, you’d think Gal Gadot would backtrack on these comments here. But sadly, she hasn’t. While it’s great that she’s so far had good experiences in Hollywood (from what we know), we can only wonder what she means by different communication. Is she trying to say that some other women in the business might be jealous of her? Yikes. Here’s hoping that’s not the case.
1. Instagram Criticism
Gal was criticized heavily when she posted this photo of her and her daughter on Instagram back in 2014. She captioned it with, “I am sending my love and prayers to my fellow Israeli citizens. Especially to all the boys and girls who are risking their lives protecting my country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas, who are hiding like cowards behind women and children… We shall overcome!!! Shabbat Shalom!”
As you can imagine, it didn’t sit too well with her critics. A lot of people blasted her from taking sides and not knowing the facts. While some people defended her, other people criticized her and reminded her that she should just stick to acting rather than make political statements on social media. Since this post, though, Gal has been very quiet about her opinions as she doesn’t want to start another Instagram firestorm.
