A Woman Is Suing Sephora, Claiming a Lipstick Sample Gave Her Herpes

In news that is not actually Halloween-related, but sounds like it could be: There could be something creepy lurking in your local cosmetics store. A California woman is reportedly suing Sephora on the basis that she contracted herpes from using a tester lipstick in one of its stores, according to TMZ.

Though details remain sparse (and Fashionista is working to track down court documents), TMZ’s report of the information notes the following:

A California woman claims she visited the store in October 2015 and sampled a lipstick from one of the ‘common use’ tubes on display… and ended up with herpes on her lip. She says the infection was diagnosed by medical pros and she claims she never had herpes or cold sores before this Sephora visit…. She’s suing the cosmetics chain for the emotional distress over an ‘incurable lifelong affliction’ she says she now has to deal with as a result of using its lipstick samples.

Consider this a reminder that communal, public makeup is perhaps not the most sanitary of options.

Fashionista has reached out to Sephora for comment and will update this post as any additional information becomes available.
