If you’re a celebrity and you’re not careful, Hollywood has the chance to be a very dangerous place. You may think you have all the money in the world, but you’ll quickly read about the ramifications of spending that income on partying and excessive alterations to your body.
There are 8 women in Hollywood who may stand out above the rest as people who you may agree have been ruined by fame and fortune. While some have managed to claw their way back, such as Demi Lovato, someone else on our list like Lisa Robin Kelly was unfortunately not quite as lucky.
The other half of our list focuses on 8 women in Hollywood who have managed to stay around for over a decade and look good while doing it. You may be surprised to learn which actresses got an early start, including Scarlett Johansson, Kirsten Dunst, and Natalie Portman. All 3 of whom should be commended for the success they’ve had in their career, as well as for their ability to stay out of trouble!
16. Ruined – Heidi Montag
There are plenty of things that are worth spending your money on. But Heidi Montag definitely did not choose those things. Including the one day that she decided to adjust 10 different parts of her body. Something that never would have happened if not being too drawn in by the lights of Hollywood. Her fortunate quickly dried up and shockingly, the life of a former reality star isn’t the most appealing.
That being said, we do have to offer our condolences to Heidi and Spencer on the birth of their son Gunner who was born on October 1st. When you consider some of Heidi’s problems came from partying it up, let’s hope her child will help reign in some of the behavior.
15. On Fire – Scarlett Johansson
When you think of Scarlett Johansson, you may think of several of her roles from the last few years where her good looks are on prominent display. Which may be why you might be a bit surprised to hear that her career spans all the way back to 1994 when she was only 10 years old and appeared in the movie North.
Johansson’s career has had a fantastic progression with several notable films, such as The Prestige and Lost in Translation, not to mention the whole Avengers franchise! While she’s gone through two divorces, including one with Ryan Reynolds, she has managed to keep herself relatively free of controversy and drama.
14. Ruined – Katherine Heigl
In Hollywood your reputation is everything. And Katherine Heigl definitely does not have a great one. She was allegedly difficult to work with on Grey’s Anatomy and while her departure from the show could have led to greener pastures, the reality is far from it.
Heigl’s most notable film, Knocked Up, is impossible to watch without remembering that Heigl insulted the movie in post-press
“It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. It exaggerated the characters, and I had a hard time with it, on some days. I’m playing such a bitch; why is she being such a killjoy? Why is this how you’re portraying women? Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience, but it was hard for me to love the movie,” said Heigl when talking with Vanity Fair.
13. On Fire – Marisa Tomei
Marisa Tomei is well-known for some of the roles she took in the 90s, such as My Cousin Vinny. There are also several roles that she is known for where she leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination, such as The Wrestler. And lately, Tomei’s biggest contribution has been to the new Spider-Man franchise. We don’t care where Tomei is showing her face, we just love seeing it! With a career that has spanned decades now and remained relatively scandal-free, we have to commend Tomei for a job well done.
12. Ruined – Jodie Sweetin
Who didn’t love watching Full House growing up? There are several reasons to have loved the show, but one of your favorites may have been Stephanie Tanner played by Jodie Sweetin.
But while life on the show was great, once it wrapped Sweetin’s life quickly fell apart. Detailing her journey in her autobiography, Sweetin admitted to drinking at the age of 14 and doing several drugs (including crack and meth) over the next 15 years.
Thankfully for Sweetin, it’s a happy story as she has since gotten her life back on track. This even included her appearing in Fuller House, but for a long time, she was one of the most tragic stories in Hollywood.
11. On Fire – Mila Kunis
Mila Kunis got her start in Hollywood in a major way when she landed one of the lead roles on That ’70s Show. That’s not the only success she has found on television though, as she is also responsible for helping bring the deplorable Meg Griffin to life on Family Guy. Kunis’ life has always managed to remain relatively free of drama.
Even her romantic life has perhaps the cutest “Hollywood” story out there, as she is married to her love interest on That ’70s Show, Ashton Kutcher. While her acting career has slowed down somewhat after starting a family with Kutcher, she’s still tremendous whenever she does show up on screen.
10. Ruined – Farrah Abraham
When you consider someone who “falls victim” to the prey of Hollywood, Farrah Abraham definitely ticks off most of the boxes. She’s made an adult film, she’s engaged in ways to alter her body, she has more controversies than we can count and to top it all off – her claim to fame in the first place was being a teen mom.
For Abraham’s sake, let’s hope she has managed to pull her life together and save the oodles of cash that has (somehow) been thrown her way over the years.
9. On Fire – Kirsten Dunst
Not only did Kirsten Dunst get a start at a young age in Hollywood, but her first ever kiss was with Brad Pitt in Interview with a Vampire! Talk about a memorable experience and a tough one for the next guy to live up to. Dunst’s movies have had ups and downs, but she has always remained in the public eye to be a level-headed and insightful celebrity.
Now at the age of 35, she still is prime to have a tremendous back half of her career. We’re sure she looked to people like Nicole Kidman, who she recently starred with in The Beguiled for inspiration!
Dunst is currently engaged to her co-star on the series Fargo Jesse Plemons. She also had a high-profile relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal from 2002-2004. It was reported that Jake and Kirsten allegedly got frisky in public places, but that’s not enough to say Hollywood ruined her!
8. Ruined – Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan looks adorable in Parents Trap and she looks gorgeous in Mean Girls. But life after that for Lohan was definitely far from ideal. Lohan had fun in a variety of ways including partying excessively and allegedly taking over 30 male celebrities to the bedroom (not at once!).
Lohan spent a significant portion of time away from the headlines of tabloids and instead worked in a variety of community service related programs. Granted many of those opportunities were court mandated.
When talking about her time away, Lohan said
7. On Fire – Hilary Duff
As this list will show, there are plenty of people who go through their most formative years in the public spotlight and they crack under the pressure. That isn’t the case for Hilary Duff who now at the age of 30, is more on top of her career and mental/physical health than ever before.
She’s even still active on television, with her show Younger receiving critical and fan support, including one critic saying “Younger is unexpectedly addictive, nothing short of extremely soothing and pleasurable to watch. It’s a bedtime story that’s supposed to lull but is too engaging to ever actually let you doze off.”
6. Ruined – Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato in 2017 is a tremendous role model for people. She embraces her body in positive ways, she actively promotes a healthy lifestyle and her career is still going strong. But while Lovato got her start on Barney, her life growing up was far from kid-friendly. This included a rampant addition to drugs that threatened to derail her life.
Lovato entered rehab at the age of 18, admitting that along with her drug addiction that she was suffering from depression and an eating disorder. The decision helped turn her life around and in 2012 she moved into a sober-living house. Hollywood didn’t break her, but it sure tried!
5. On Fire – Mayim Bialik
Mayim Bialik is most recognized for her role today on The Big Bang Theory as Amy Farrah Fowler. But she also may standout to 90s kids as the lead character on the television show Blossom. Yet despite the potential career that was laid out in front of Bialik of being an actress, she followed her passion for education and returned to school – later completing her Ph.D.
Knowing she was still a talented actress, we’re sure The Big Bang Theory was over the moon when she walked through to audition for the part. We’re sure her real-life genius brain also comes in handy for some days around the set!
4. Ruined – Tara Reid
Tara Reid found her biggest success of her career towards the end of the 90s when she appeared as Vicky in American Pie; a role she reprised several times. But the other franchise to her name is Sharknado, which may speak to the overall success of her career. Reid also faced scrutiny from the tabloids and general public after a botched attempt to alter her appearance.
Reid attempted to gain some attention again by appearing on Big Brother 8 UK (despite y’know, being born in New Jersey), but was evicted after 16 days. Reid spent part of 2017 filming another Sharknado film and is also working on a television film titled Trailer Park Shark.
3. On Fire – Jennifer Aniston
There is no shortage of actors who have come through with one major television show but never managed to find any success after that. But that isn’t a sentiment you can share about Jennifer Aniston whose name in 2017 carries just as much weight as it did back in the 90s when Friends was going strong.
It definitely helps that Aniston seems to have found the fountain of youth and literally looks hotter (at least in many people’s eyes) now than she did in her “prime years”. Sure, Aniston has put out some terrible movies over the years, but she’s still been able to find consistent work and remains one of the highest-paid actresses when she does appear on set.
2. Ruined – Lisa Robin Kelly
Lisa Robin Kelly‘s most notable roles was sadly, also one of her last on That ’70s Show. But while the characters on the show smoked marijuana, the problems with drugs and substances in Kelly’s life were far more serious.
After suffering a miscarriage, Kelly’s life turned to escapism and a drinking problem got her booted from the series. By 2010 she was standing in front of a judge for a DUI, a process she repeated in 2013.
Kelly’s life came to a tragic end in 2013 after suffering from what doctors called a “multiple drug intoxication”. To make the death all the more tragic, Kelly had checked into rehab prior to her passing.
1. On Fire – Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman got her start in the 1994 cult classic Leon: The Professional when she was under the age of 15. Though while Leon may be the better movie, we wouldn’t blame you if the movie you best recognized her from (at least at first) was her role as Padme in the Star Wars trilogy from the 1999/2000s.
Portman is more than just a gorgeous face, having attained a degree in Psychology from Harvard University. Her best role as an actress may also be one of her most recent, with Jackie seeing her get nominated for an Academy Award. Though we also wouldn’t blame you if your favorite role of Portman’s was Black Swan that saw her getting all up on Mila Kunis’ business!
