You can’t scroll through Facebook without coming across the familiar face of Giorgio Tsoukalos from the show Ancient Aliens. With those outstretched arms, squinty eyes, and that trademark crazy hair (which seems to get wilder every season) he’s the subject of a thousand internet memes, usually sporting an Aliens caption. He’s undoubtedly the star of the show, and thanks to his popularity and internet fame, almost everyone knows who he is, even if they’ve never seen the show.

History Channel’s Ancient Aliens is a documentary-style TV series that showcases theories about Ancient Aliens on Earth, which is the idea that intelligent extra-terrestrial beings visited Earth and made contact with humans in prehistoric times. According to this theory, almost all deities were actually aliens and aliens are responsible for our current culture and technology. It’s an intriguing idea, but it’s not taken seriously by the academic world. The show has been slammed by critics for presenting pseudoscience and pseudohistory as fact, but there’s no denying that people are fascinated by the ideas discussed in Ancient Aliens. If people weren’t interested, the show definitely would not currently be enjoying its 12th season.

So have you ever wondered about the man behind the memes? Here are 15 things we bet you didn’t know about Giorgio Tsoukalos.

15. He Used To Work As A Bodybuilding Promoter

Not only does Giorgio appear on Ancient Aliens giving his opinions about extraterrestrial life, but he also acts as a consulting producer for the show. But what is his background and how did he come to be considered an expert? Well, Giorgio actually doesn’t have a scientific background at all. He graduated from Ithaca College (New York) in 1998, with a bachelor’s degree in sports information and communication and for several years afterward, he worked (believe it or not) as a bodybuilding promoter and a volunteer in bodybuilding contests, including events like Mr. Olympia. He also produced and directed the annual San Francisco Pro Grand Prix from 2001 until 2005. He then met Chariots of the Gods author, Erich von Daniken (who also appears on the show) and began studying Ancient Alien theory under him.

14. His Mentor Served Time

While he was still working in the sport promoting world, Giorgio became interested in the Ancient Alien Astronaut Theory and set out to meet one of the most popular proponents of the theory, author Erick von Daniken. Daniken wrote his first book on the subject, Chariots of the Gods, in 1968 and despite all expectations, it became a worldwide bestseller. He lived the “playboy lifestyle” for a while after that, but it soon caught up to him and he ended up in prison on fraud charges (where he wrote his next book). After meeting Daniken, Giorgio began to study under him and was introduced to other people in the field. Today, Giorgio is the Director of Daniken’s Ancient Alien Society (formerly A.A.S. R.A. – Archaeology, Astronautics and SETI Research Association).

13. What Happened To His Magazine?

On Ancient Aliens, Giorgio’s credentials are listed as “Publisher of Legendary Times”. But what exactly is this publication and where can it be found? According to the Aliens Man, the online and print journal Legendary Times, “is the only publication in the world to exclusively report about the Ancient Astronaut theory.” It seems he was the founder of this publication which began in 1998 and published through until 2008 (just before Giorgio began to appear on Ancient Aliens). Since 2008 though no new issues have been published and there’s no information about whether or not there will be further publications. The magazine does still have an active Facebook page which looks like it’s primarily used to promote Giorgio’s speaking engagements and appearances. According to the site, you can download back issues through Tsoukalos’ publishing company, Legendary Times Books.

12. He Doesn’t Mind Being A Meme

Many folks who end up the subject of internet memes aren’t too happy about it, but Giorgio is surprisingly cool with it. During a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session, one fan asked him how being a meme made him feel and he responded, “I think it’s a great honor to have been embraced by the interwebz, worldwide. I really think that it just shows that—it doesn’t show anything, but it shows that people embrace the show. I think it’s wonderful, the fan-base, I have the best fans in the world.” When you think about it, the ever-increasing number of memes featuring him only helps to make him and his theories more famous and well-known so it is a win-win situation. Say it with me now – Aliens, man.

11. The Truth About That Trademark Hair

Okay, let’s address the elephant in the room. What is going on with this guy’s hair? Have you also noticed how it seems to get wilder and wilder as the seasons go on? Are aliens to blame? A few people asked Giorgio about his trademark locks on Reddit and they wanted to know whether it was styled or au-naturel. A few even wanted to know what made him choose such a “sweet do”. And to their delight, the Aliens Man was more than forthcoming with his answers. He admitted that his famously big hair is “definitely styled” and confessed that it takes quite a bit of hairspray to hold it all in place. He also said that nothing really made him choose the style, it just happened gradually over time. Well, we love the hair Giorgio – keep flying your weird flag high!

10. He Believes He’s Seen A UFO

Okay, we all know that Giorgio believes in aliens, but did you know he also claims to have actually seen one? When asked if had ever personally seen a UFO here’s what he said, “On August 8, 2014, along with 26 other people, with night-vision goggles, in Joshua Tree at the Contact in the Desert Conference around midnight, where we saw stars inside the Big Dipper, which obviously didn’t belong there, and after 10 minutes of observing those two stars, they began to move equidistant from each other up into space, or into darkness of the night sky. So essentially removing themselves, or moving away from the Big Dipper. I would not talk about this event, but because as a whole there were 27 people, we all saw the same, I certainly have no problem in talking about this. Because we know what we saw. We all saw the same thing. And we were all quite sober, so there was nothing weird going on, or anything like that. Those two things most certainly were not meteors, because they were flying up, and not towards the earth, and they weren’t satellites because they disappeared into space.”

9. He Doesn’t Mind People Thinking He’s Crazy

Giorgio says that being an internet meme doesn’t bother him, but surely there must be a part of him that feels hurt when people ridicule him? When asked how he responds to people who think he’s mad for believing in aliens this is what he said, “That’s perfectly fine. Because I am the first one to admit that what I am talking about is crazy, or can be regarded as crazy, so I am perfectly aware that these thoughts sound out there. BUT this does not prevent me from continuing to ask questions. Because if—in this day and age—asking questions means that you’re crazy? Then I admit, I am the craziest of them all.” What do you think? Could he be on to something there?

8. Is No Proof Of Aliens Proof Of Aliens?

One Reddit user asked Giorgio what he considered the most plausible proof of extraterrestrials and this is what he had to say: “It’s not necessarily one piece of the puzzle per se. It is the overall picture. Because what we are talking about, in the Ancient Astronaut theory, we are talking about circumstantial evidence. It’s the combination of a whole bunch of pieces that can be regarded as circumstantial evidence, and in a court of law, circumstantial evidence allows you to win court cases. There are no crashed UFOs that are on display anywhere, or no extraterrestrial tools have been found, those are all items that so far have not been discovered, there is no one concise piece of evidence that we can say, ‘Look, here is the smoking gun.’”

7. He Believes Aliens Could Make Themselves Invisible

Okay so if aliens are out there, and they’ve been lurking around for millions of years, why haven’t we seen one yet? Giorgio might have an answer. When asked about his thoughts on the Fermi Paradox (which basically asks the question: if aliens exist, why haven’t we seen them yet?) he replied, “The Fermi Paradox is an incredibly important observation. However, we have to understand that providing extraterrestrials exist, and providing that they have been here in the past, and are currently either observing or even still visiting us, their technology is so far beyond what we can even imagine—the idea or the suggestion that, you know, ‘if they exist, where are they?’ just because we cannot see them does not mean they are not here—because their technological capabilities would allow them to essentially appear invisible to us.”

6. What He Thinks About Ancient Aliens Debunked

Some people get themselves very worked up over the ideas suggested in Ancient Aliens and take it way, way too seriously. One of the show’s harshest critics is a man called Chris White, who felt so strongly that the show was misleading the public that he wrote and directed a three-hour documentary called Ancient Aliens Debunked. It was basically a point by point critique of the “ancient astronaut theory” proposed by people like Giorgio, Erich von Däniken, and David Childress. So what does Giorgio think of this documentary? Well, he says he has watched it, but he wasn’t that impressed. “A three-hour movie cannot debunk 50 years of research,” he said. “I welcome the effort, but it has not, in any way, shape, or form, changed my opinion.”

5. He Loves Star Wars And The X-Files

So what does a man like Giorgio like to watch when he sits down to relax? Well, it should come as no surprise that he’s a huge Star Wars and X-Files fan! “Someone asked if I had a favorite movie or TV show about aliens,” he said, responding to a question on Reddit. “OH MY GOSH, there are too many! I love the Alien franchise. I’m a huge fan of Star Wars. Stargate is 100% based ON the Ancient Astronaut theory, so you know … there are many, many science fiction movies and TV shows that are wonderfully embracing the idea of Ancient Astronauts. I just saw yesterday or is it today, the second Star Wars trailer, and I think I’m already going to stand in line for it! TAKE MY MONEY NOW!”

4. He Says We Should Accept That We Are Not Alone

When asked what we as average citizens should do about the presence of extra-terrestrials on our planet (yes, they’re here, don’t fool yourself), Giorgio had this to say, “That’s a great question. Personally, I think that it’s something that we should just keep an open mind about, with the idea that we are not alone – it’s basically the idea that we are not alone in the universe, and that to me is a very valid question, because it puts us in a very unique position, and that the universe is shared with others. And that alone is an incredible thought. It also deals with our origins. It deals with our place in the universe, and the moment that we come to the acceptance that perhaps we are not alone – I think things might change also on planet earth. Because we are all one.”

3. How Giorgio Became Interested In Ancient Alien Theory

So who got Giorgio interested in aliens? He says it was his grandmother! “When I was – this was, uh, dinner table conversation growing up at my house. When I was a little boy, my grandmother introduced me to the topic of Ancient Astronauts, Atlantis, various topics, as bedtime stories, and so I was exposed to those things at a very early age. And it stuck with me. And it was something where my grandmother was a devout Catholic, but at the same time, she was open-minded enough to realize that ‘hey, perhaps there’s something else out there – or there’s more to the story.’ And that is something that I carried with me, that opened up my interest already – when I became a teenager, or even earlier, it was something I was interested in for a while.”

2. He Doesn’t Believe The Moon Landing Was Faked

Giorgio seems to believe a lot of things that other people would just dismiss as too far-fetched but there are some conspiracy theories he doesn’t buy into, such as the faked moon landing conspiracy. When asked about his thoughts on this conspiracy he said, “There is no question in my mind that we went to the moon. Because equipment was left back by the astronauts, and each year, lasers are trained at the moon, toward the equipment that was left behind, and this is done in order to measure the distance between the moon and the earth. I highly doubt that those pieces of equipment, or that piece of equipment, was brought to the moon by robots.”

1. Giorgio Is Married

Giorgio likes to keep his private life under wraps so few of his fans know that he is actually married. Yes, that’s right, he got married to a young pretty jewelry designer by the name of Krix Beeble back in 2013, and from the looks of things they are still very happy together. Krix specializes in making designs and jewelry using borosilicate glass, gems and metal, and considering that she’s married to the Aliens Man it should come as no surprise that her designs include items such as the Galactic crystal trigonal glass chandelier earrings, the Glimpse of the Universe ring and the Domed Universe ring. Giorgio, a clearly doting husband, proudly wears her designs when he appears on TV, and she loves to travel with him when he presents lectures. Sounds like a great match!
