Moonlight took home best picture at the Oscars, which will hopefully mean more exposure for Barry Jenkins’ beautiful film. This is also a good opportunity to check out Jenkins’ first film, Medicine for Melancholy, which is streaming on Netflix.
The 2008 romantic comedy stars Wyatt Cenac and Tracey Heggins as two San Francisco residents who spend a day together after a one-night stand. But the film also addresses gentrification and race. In a recent interview about the film, Jenkins said: “I felt like I needed to make a movie that was personal to me and that was personal to my experience of the city, and that was when everything sort of came together.”
