Was this going too far?
Public shaming has become a common way of punishing criminals lately. With the availability of social media, more and more criminals are put to shame in order to reflect on their bad behavior. In China, we’ve seen cheating women being publicly humiliated, or mistresses being dragged and beaten by enraged wives—but never a public-shaming as bizarre as this!
Rodents can be real pests when it comes to stealing food from humans. They munch and chew on whatever they can, and it can be a real nuisance. A convenience store in Lianping County of Heyuan city in southern China’s Guangdong Province had enough of these rodents and decided to ‘publicly shame’ one rat that was caught.
On a post on Chinese website Weibo by a screen name “jiu lian shan she zhang” showed pictures of the rodent being tied up to what seemed to be a trolley. A piece of paper attached to the animal’s body explained that it had been caught stealing rice at a convenient store.
The post reads:
“A friend of mine found a small rat in the warehouse of a convenient store.
“After the rat was arrested, it was shamed by a poster. Poor rat! How could it spend the Lunar New Year?”
While some netizens found it funny, there were some who found it to be too cruel, since rats are animals too. What do you think about all this?
