She was even called the ugliest person in the world at one point in her life.

Memes are a particularly rich source of incredibly harsh online bullying. One particular viral meme has created laughs for many netizens—but is terribly hurtful towards one person. As the meme spread like wildfire in the internet, she was criticized by many strangers.

Lizzie Velasquez was born with a rare congenital disease that, among other symptoms, prevents her from accumulating body fat. She has also been diagnosed with Marfan syndrome. Due to her disease and syndrome, her physical appearance was greatly affected, leaving her being bullied by her peers.

Back in 2015, she told Today how she’d found a photo of herself on YouTube which named her the “ugliest woman in the world.” She admitted: “I felt like someone was putting a fist through the computer screen and physically punching me. I bawled my eyes out.”

Lizzie is someone who knows the devastating power of memes firsthand. Every now and again, as she’s scrolling through her Facebook feed, she comes across photos of her face with incredibly insulting captions attached.

She posts an eye-opening message on Twitter, hopefully putting a stop to online bullying through these memes.

What is the Marfan syndrome?

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic disorder of the connective tissue. The degree to which people are affected varies. People with Marfan tend to be tall, and thin, with long arms, legs, fingers and toes. They also typically have flexible joints and scoliosis.
