Move over, Tyra Banks. There’s a new IRL Barbie in town.
According to Variety, comedian Amy Schumer is reportedly in early talks to star in Sony’s live-action Barbie movie.
In addition to possibly snagging the lead role, Schumer and her sister Kim Caramele are expected to rewrite the script. Caramele has also written and produced for her sister’s show Inside Amy Schumer.
Variety reported the premise will be similar to Amy Adams’ Enchanted and Tom Hanks’ Big in that the main character gets booted from Barbieland for being less than perfect and goes on an adventure.
While we’re still waiting to see Tyra Banks reprise her role as Eve the superstar doll from Life-Size, the Sony’s Barbie film is projected to open in the summer of 2018.
In reality, Schumer is quite ideal for the role of “imperfect Barbie.” Yes, she’s made some very… questionable choices in the past, most recently filming her own music video to Beyoncé’s “Formation.” But despite receiving criticism for being an imperfect champion for body positivity, Schumer still attempts to make body acceptance part of a broader conversation.
Given Barbie’s own “problematic” history of having an unattainable body size and shape that, if someone actually attained, would make life a living hell, this role might give Schumer the opportunity to share that message on a larger scale, too.
