They beat the unknown creature until it fell unconscious.
An unknown animal wandered into Sibu village in Borneo and startled locals with its alien-looking appearance. Shocked and confused villagers immediately beat the ‘alien’ brutally until it lost consciousness.
Once the unknown creature lost consciousness, the villagers took time to analyse what kind of animal it was, but they couldn’t explain what it was. The creature’s face resembled a dog’s, but it was large-bodied and was able to walk on two feet at some instances.
Worker Herman Tutu, 33, explained that they only attacked out of shock and fear of the unknown: ‘We were shocked. None of us has ever seen such thing. One of us then hit the animal until it appeared to have passed out.’
When the creature finally regained consciousness, though limping and scared, tried hard to run away from the scary villagers. Apparently, the ‘alien’ was actually a malnourished and sick sun bear.
A few months later, the same bear was found at a near plantation. Remembering how humans treated her, the bear was defensive at first. Thankfully, the rescuers were able to save the bear. Her overall condition has since improved.
Apparently, the bear was suffering from skin infection, moderate anaemia, and mite infestation. Fortunately, the animal soon showed signs of recovery and if her health improves further, they hope to release her back into the wild.
What is a Sun Bear?
The smallest of the world’s eight living bear species, the Malayan sun bear has short, sleek fur which is usually black but can range from reddish-brown to grey. Almost every sun bear has an individually distinct chest patch that is typically yellow, orange, or white, and may sometimes be speckled or spotted.
